"Michigan is going through a challenging transition, a transition that has hit our area of the state particularly hard. The Manufacturing Industry, an important part of our economy in southeast Michigan, is going through a painful recession. The truth is that Michigan cannot recover until the manufacturing sector of the economy recovers, or until other industries decide to locate in Michigan. I applaud Governor Granholm's efforts to stimulate job creation in high-growth economic areas such as health care, alternative energy, and advanced manufacturing."

"There are many ways state government can help to energize our economy. First is to train and re-train our workers for the new economy, showing the world that Michigan workers are the most skilled workers in the industrialized world. State government must also work to make Michigan home for the next-generation economy, investing in and encouraging growth in the advanced manufacturing, the life sciences, and research and development for future technologies. State government must also fight for fair trade agreements that incorporate labor and environmental protection standards. I fully support Governor Granholm's Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow program. The program has been in place a short time and jobs and our economy have already started returning to this state. In the next few months we will hear of advanced technology companies like GOOGLE expanding and locating in Michigan. I look forward to working with the Governor and the legislature to keep Michigan moving forward."
